How language shapes the way we think | Lera Boroditsky

  • 添加 3 年 前

    TEDTED

There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world -- and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think? Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language -- from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian -- that suggest the answer is a resounding yes. "The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is," Boroditsky says. "Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000."

Obviously her education in Spanish language never went beyond learning the alphabet. That shows in the poor example she used at 9:15. She seems to have a command of the English language though, considering she is a native Belarusian.

I am a translator to the UN, who speaks 62 languages, the most number of any known person. This is true - but mainly for core languages. You cannot translate between some languages as the concepts behind are different. However, many 2nd or 3rd language speakers learn a new tongue in the perspective of the first, which dilutes the original languages. Also, your first language directly dictates how you learn other languages.

In my language - Estonian - we don't have any genders whatsoever, not even she and he. And we don't say to animals "it" as we perceive them as alive beings. For us the gender consept in Indo-European languages is very hard to understand, things are just things, not female and male! 🤷🏼‍♀️

5:00 Interesting I can only speak American English and I think of time as starting from present on the left going back to the right in an up, down, up, down switching every 100 years until 1500 AD. When it switches to an arch. But these are not permanent they switch alot depending on what I'm researching. but those have been the most common ways I looked at time since I was young.

So how can you prove that these differences are due to language itself and not to the repetition of behavioral and cognitive habits? I would say that culture affects our way of thinking, it is not reduced to language

If you think having male and female grammatical genders in nouns is hard, imagine that in greek (and not only in greek) there is a neutral gender too. The sun is male, the sea is female, the window is neutral. If all that sounds greek to you, you're quite correct.

I love this very much! This a great video for translators. In Arabic poetry, there is a line that includes the sun and the moon. In Arabic sun is considered feminine while the moon is feminine. The poet explains how the state of the sun as being feminine is no shame to it as no one can do without it and the state of the moon being masculine is not something to be proud of! If you translate this to French or German, this is gonna be totally the opposite! hahaha

There's actually at least two versions of most languages. If you told someone you bend your back over you'll see it as a metaphor. However, many autistic people will picture someone bending their back literally. It's as if people on The Autism Spectrum speak a different version of their own language and causes so many misunderstandings.

STUDENT: CAMARGO DE LA CRUZ DIANA CAROLINA It is one of those magical abilities that humans have.We can transmit complex thoughts between us. Thanks to this ability, humans can transmit our ideas across large dimensions of time and space. We can transmit knowledge through our minds.Of course, there is not just one language in the world, there are about 7000 languages spoken around the world, and they all differ in different ways. Some languages have different sounds, different vocabularies and they also have different structures; that is very important, the different structures. I thought the same thing, that there's not only in linguistics scope, but also how a culture affects someone's mind and reasoningClearly, languages require different things of their speakers. Does this mean that the speakers think differently about the world? Do English, Spanish, and Russian speakers end up attending to, partitioning, and remembering their experiences differently just because they speak different languages?. Just look at the way people talk, they might say. Certainly, speakers of different languages must attend to and encode strikingly different aspects of the world just so they can use their language properly.

"How language shapes the way we think ", In my opinión some languages modifies the meanings of some words, and the pronunciation and intention how they are pronunced. For instance rusian language could have an powerful and scared pronunciation, but on the other hand french language coud sound so sweet, without bad intentions.

We're thankful for the given talk. We learnt the perspectives of a second language learner.
