Australia should 'increase manufacturing' and 'stand firm against Chinese threats'

Nationals Senator Matt Cannavan says unlike Andrew Forrest and Kerry stokes he doesn't think Australia should "buckle" to Chinese demands, but "we should reduce our vulnerability" to its threats.
The Chinese Ambassador recently made thinly veiled threats suggesting China could decide to boycott Australian goods if our government continued to push for an international independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.
“We need to secure our future and manufacture more of our products and look to process more of the minerals we produce here in Australia," he told Sky News host Paul Murray.
Mr Canavan said the green economic recovery propagated by the left “would just keep digging the hole that makes us reliant on China”.
He also said renewable energy was a “proven failure” in Australia.
“We’ve had significant renewable investment over the past decade and alongside that we’ve had escalating electricity prices which are now some of the highest electricity prices in the world”.

Firstly I like Sky News, rare truthful content. We have just signed a new trade agreement with Indonesia and they’re less threatening than China. Indonesia also has 270 million mouths to eat our beef and they’re right next door. Move away from China and focus closer to home.

Increase manufacturing and reduce our vulnerabilities ........ That's because our dickhead government hasn't supported domestic manufacturing in Australia for the last 30 years, and......only NOW it it's becoming an issue? China isn't the problem, it's the dumb cunts we elect and what they have done in that time, stop blaming another country and Kerry Stokes or Andrew Forrest for our FUCK UPS as a country!

China put tariff on barley then Australia put tariffs immediately on all Chinese goods coming into Australia. Those tariffs then go back to help the barley farmers. China will put tariffs on Iron ore LAST because they got to protect their China boy puppet. USA went through this stuff. Play hardball with CCP. Get all those Chinese spies out as well.

I find it frightening how little these politicians know. Solar power is the cheapest form of energy generation. If you want to manufacture in Australia why wouldn't you use the cheapest form of energy? Yes a solar panel is made from coal and quartz. Both abundant in Australia. This bloke instantly says "if you want solar panels you have to buy them from China". That's exactly the lack of innovation or knowledge of what your talking about that is the reason we cannot manufacture anything here.

We should be using Austrade and with a list of goods we currently buy from China, approach countries like Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, etc and secure supplies at the right price. We can not manufacture in Australia because every worker wants a four bedroom house with an ensuite and a pool as well as a brand new 4WD.

The problem is China owns so much of this country. After this CV fiasco our government had a wonderful opportunity to show we aren't going sell the silverware. What did Frydenberg do at the very first opportunity, hiding behind the FIRB, he allowed the sale of an historic house and farm in Victoria to a Chinese billionaire. Barely made the MSM, just unbelievable. I think what the government (Both varieties) says and actually allows are two different things. We will continue to sell out everything to the highest bidder until we are serfs in our own country.

I'm not sure how me getting paid money to generate electricity on my house from solar is more expensive than paying for electricity generated by coal and gas...? Sky, you're funded by gas and coal lobbyists so i get it, you're spruiking those that feed you. But you can't honestly believe the financial argument when it's obvious it doesn't stack up. If anything the continued funding and support for the iron ore industry is making us increasingly reliant on China, and we've placed all our eggs in one basket. It doesn't take a genius to realise that starting a manufacturing industry will take 20+ years, over which time iron ore and China will be funding the majority of australia. The only people that are believing your news are the uneducated and gullible or those too caught up in the politics to see the full story. I feel sorry for everyone who laps this up.

@gaboogablah '... have no choice.' is a dangerously weak argument. You have no choice but to buy food, and pay for healthcare, but you do have a choice - as does every consumer - about whether or not to buy luxury goods if you care so deeply about the oppressed and underpaid workers who fulfilled your wants.

20 天 前

Of course there are some Chinese products in my house, but some things are only made in China. I go out of my way to not buy Chinese products, even pay more just for my own mind sake i didn't buy something from China. Even my drums, i spent almost double just so the label didn't say made in China. Wherever possible i don't buy anything from China, unfortunately sometimes you have no choice. Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, etc, I'll buy with a clear conscience, but it almost feels immoral to buy anything from China, actually it is immoral because you're just funding the Chinese military and expansion. I'm honest. It's impossible to say anyone doesn't have something from China, but I'm very picky and go out of my way to to make sure where things I buy come from and wherever possible i won't buy anything from China, even if it costs more.

I have been seeing and hearing most of the statements from Chinese government officials towards Australia and to other countries.if Chinese engages in this kind of politics in the face of the virus ,which the people of the world blaming China for. I mean trying to act as bad boy will tarnish Chinese government images for many years to come and China will never be able to handle this problem.,I really don't know if those Chinese government officials are in the favor to help China out of this problem or they want China to be tarnish by this problem. in the other hand China has been building itself on trouble paths, because the present government has abandoned its idea of win win seeing that the win win spirit is dead, and its win win ideology make Chinese to look good to the world ' belt and road. and banks ,not military power or virus virus power actually the military power makes China look suspicious to the world because no one knows the their military intentions, ....now Chinese is following its ambition to match or to overtake the USA and Russia something that is almost impossible and China will die trying. I listen some people says maybe in next 100 years or next 50 years to come. the meaning of this kind of saying can be seemed as a whole joke. THE whole world knows that the USA is very generous country and almost all the peace and war in the world guarantee by usa, sometimes people mistaken it as being stupid. people think that if China is America the world would have been destroyed and dead already. can't you see that all the countries in Asia are very very appreciated that the usa is demonstrating so called freedom of navigation, you must be a fool if you don't know that all the top powerful Asian countries and small too have pleaded for usa to act.and those are more willing to swallow any consequences that may follow. the threat from China to Australia is destabilizing to China itself all the effort .many people will change their attitudes toward China and that will be bad,
